According to the legend of Tadkeshwar Mahadev Temple, Tadakasura was a demon, who had asked God for immortality by performing austerities to Lord Shiva. Bhagavan Shiva grants immortality to Tarakasura by seeing the immense devotion and worship of Tarakasura. After some time, Tarakasura starts doing wrong work in the earth with Amrita boon and starts killing saints.

Seeing the peaceful atmosphere on earth through Tarakasura, the saints approached Lord Shiva. To fight with Tadakasur, Lord Shiva married Mata Parvati and gave birth to Karthik. Just as Karthik’s hands were about to kill Tadakasur, then Tadakasura started praying to Lord Shiva and asked for forgiveness.

Then Lord Shiva forgives him saying that in Kalyug you will worship Lord Shiva and Tarakasura is worshiped in the name of Lord Shiva, hence this place is known as Tadkeshwar Mahadev. Earlier, Shivling was present in the Tadkeshwar Mahadev temple, it was worshiped but now the idol statue of Shivji has been installed there.

According to the beliefs of the Mahadev temple, it is also said that Bhagwan Shiva also rested there after the slaughter of Tarakasura. When Mata Parvati saw that Lord Shiva was feeling the heat of the sun, she herself took the form of the trees of Devadar and gave the image to Lord Shiva. There are 6 palm trees in the premises of Tadkeshwar Mahadev Temple.

Situated 90 kilometers from Haridwar, ahead of town lies further down the Lansdowne road: Shri Tadkeshwar Mahadev Temple. Till the way of Lansdowne, the number of people is very good.
